June 2009 'Tire Pressure Maintenance' Report from NHTSA published:
A new study into the effectiveness of Tire Pressure Monitoring TPMS has concluded that Direct TPMS is effective in preventing significant under inflation. The study which recently came into the public domain investigates the percentages of overinflated and under inflated tires on 2,316 cars, light trucks and SUV's with Direct and Indirect TPMS and without TPMS were measured and compared. Some of the conclusions drawn were:
- The percentage of vehicles with correct pressure is much higher for the TPMS group than for the non-TPMS (Peer) group.
- While 45% of vehicles with under inflated tires belong to the TPMS Group, a much higher percentage is attributed to the Peer Group. The underinflation is greater for Indirect systems.
- More TPMS equipped vehicles are overinflated (53%) versus 45% of the Peer vehicles of which 47% have at least one tire overinflated.
'Statistical analysis performed on the survey data provide sufficient evidence in favour of TPMS, especially in favour of direct TPMS. Since this data collection, further improvements have been made to both kinds of TPMS, so different results are to be expected if the study were to be repeated'. September 2008 - Manufacturer TPMS Websites Launched:
We have recently launched a number of mini websites which provide specific TPMS manufacturer model & year information. Our TPMS Tools operate with all of the car manufacturers which operate within the US and Canada. Specific OE car producer TPMS data is provided on our Toyota, Ford, Honda, Nissan, GM, Chrysler, Hyundai, Subaru, Mitsubishi & Kia websites. TPMS replacement is called for when the TPMS fails due to mechanical or electrical failure, broken accelerometer, low TPMS battery power or blocked pressure port. One of the most common causes of failure is inappropriate handling during wheel or tire removal or servicing. The TPMS is an electronic component fitted as part of a heavyweight mechanical process.

August 2008 - TPMS Tool Return on Investment using the TECH400:
While it is difficult to place an exact dollar value on customer satisfaction, we can compute the costs of paying an OE dealer to finish (or repair) the TPMS service started by the ISF. Based on daily direct communication with the ISF, Bartec USA estimates that a moderately busy ISF currently experiences 30-50 TPMS vehicles per month. If three of these service jobs had to be sent to a dealer for re-learn or repair (paid by the ISF), their potential cost would be $135-645.24 per month. For example, an Independent Tire Dealer fits a 2008 Toyota Camry with four new wheels, tires and TPMS sensors. The tire dealer would have to spend an average of $215.08 to have those new wheels programmed into the control module, not to mention driving the car to the OE dealer to complete the work. This is lost margin. However, if the tire dealer uses the TECH400, the work is done quickly and accurately at their shop and the customer leaves satisfied with a job well done! April 2008 - Avis adopts the TECH400 across all US locations:
Avis have adopted the TECH400 across all of their US locations. When they first approached Bartec they said their problem was car returns with the TPMS warning light on. They did not know what the fault was and how to repair and turn off the tread light. They were having to take the cars back to the dealers and pay big bucks for repairs. The TECH400's are now used across the US to diagnose the TPMS faults and support the replacement of faulty sensors including initializing replacement sensors, reprogramming the cars and turning the warning lights off. Avis will continue to benefit from the rolling program of software updates for new vehicles and new TPMS designs in the future.

February 2008 - Article from Tire review.com by Hank Inman:
While NHTSA's TPMS mandates targeted new vehicles, there are still plenty of implications for aftermarket participants. Even though TPMS awareness has been around for a while, it's ironic because TPMS, as it relates to compatible equipment, diagnostic tools and service, is still in a growth stage. The product lineup can change frequently - sometimes daily. "The TECH300 Plus activates and decodes most of the sensors currently in use today," said Bartec engineer Paul Salisbury. "It features an 'audit mode,' and after a full sensor decode, the tool can be plugged into a PC or laptop and the sensor data is easily displayed. It can be saved and even printed to be used for customer reports."
NHTSA have stipulated that by 2008 all US cars will be fitted with TPMS systems:
NHTSA have stipulated that by 2008 all US cars will be fitted with TPMS systems most of which use 'direct' sensors which are either part of the valve stem or banded to the wheel. These transmit their own ID along with their pressure, temperature and other data to the vehicle ECU. Every time you need to rotate tires or replace a faulty sensor then the ECU needs to be reprogrammed with the new ID and their position on the vehicle. Click here for a PDF version of the ruling or click here to visit the Bartec USA section on TPMS legislation.
